Machine Setup:
Die Selection: Choose the appropriate die to achieve the desired pellet size and shape.
Parameter Adjustment: Set the extruder's operating parameters-such as temperature, screw speed, and water addition rate-according to the specific recipe and feed type. This step is crucial for obtaining the desired product characteristics.
Extrusion Process:
Feeding: Gradually feed the mixed and ground material into the extruder's hopper. Avoid overloading.
Extrusion: The machine heats, compresses, and cooks the mixture, forcing it through the die to form pellets.
Cutting: Rotating knives at the die exit cut the extruded material into pellets of the desired length.
Post-Extrusion Processing:
Drying: Immediately dry the hot, moist pellets using a suitable dryer to reduce moisture content to a safe level-typically below 10–12%-for storage. This prevents mold growth and spoilage.
Cooling: Cool the dried pellets to ambient temperature using a cooler. This prevents condensation and helps maintain product quality.
Coating (Optional): If desired, coat the cooled pellets with fats, palatants, or other additives using a coating drum. This step enhances palatability and nutritional value, especially for dog food.
